Writers for Recovery is a new creative thinktank and community of writers, bloggers and journal keepers who find inspiration, focus, or are seeking encouragement in writing as a therapeutic tool for mental health recovery.

WHY WRITE?

Writing is strongly rooted in freedom of self-expression, developing a positive identity, and empowering the individual through creative thought and process. Writing can be as simple as an act of framing thoughts at the end of a challenging day, or the more complex process of developing a central character plot for a screenplay or film for future production.

THE SCIENCE

Recent studies and clinical trials have demonstrated positive outcomes for using writing as a therapeutic tool alongside traditional medical models for recovering from mental health issues such as past trauma, depression, and PTSD. Recognised benefits include greater connectedness, improved cognitive function and memory, better self-awareness, and the ability to hold a safe personal space to express challenging emotions.
