THE SOUL ASYLUMS

Creative founder of Writers for Recovery, Sheridan Hough, began to write his memoir The Soul Asylums about his personal experiences of mental health recovery during Lockdown in 2020. This seed of creativity began a journey of discovery and discipline through harnessing writing as a means of self-expression and tool for those seeking recovery in challenging times. So began a story of searching for hope, renewal, and purpose in the power of the written word.

YEAR OF THE BLOG

The chapter that followed was a year of blogging about this recovery journey through writing, as he sought rehabilitation, reinvention, and renewal. The Pill Diaries blog, which continues today, has reached a global audience from Camden Lock to Khartoum, drawing attention and plaudits from mainstream media and mental health charities in the UK.

MENTAL HEALTH CAMPAIGNING

Over a five year period, the Writers for Recovery project continued to evolve, from delivering writing for recovery workshops for Voice Collective through Mind in Camden, to a motivational talk to inmates facing mental health challenges in HMP Pentonville. Writers for Recovery continues to support the work of Voices Unlocked and detainees in the UK Criminal Justice System.

WRITERS FOR RECOVERY

The original concept of Writers for Recovery was inspired alongside Sheridan’s debut publication The Soul Asylums  due for launch in October 2026, with a vision of developing and growing an online community of individuals with a shared creative focus, passion, and commitment for writing for recovery, in particular mental health, and to inspire a new generation of writers, bloggers, journalers, and storytellers for the future.
