Writers for Recovery

"Inspiring individuals and building community through writing journeys of mental health recovery"

Many of us will face challenges surrounding our mental health at some stage of our lives journey. And we all have a story to tell from the frontline – from underground survivor tales of hope and overcoming the odds, to the rise of the underdog story destined for the big screen. Since the pandemic and across history, personal writing has become a creative force for self-expression and recovery in challenging times, while the need for community is more relevant than ever today.

The Soul Asylums project believes in connection through words, connection through community, in individual resilience and collective strength found through shared experiences of personal writing, blogging, journalling, and storytelling.

Stuck on a hamster wheel of trauma,  medicated for pain by psychiatry, addicted to substances and suffering, spent sleepless nights with insomnia, a social vagrant or outcast, cut adrift from family and friends, misdiagnosed by the mainstream, or a survivor of a breakdown from the edges of reality…
